Lenten Series: Scrolls and Scripture in Early Judaism and Christianity

We are pleased to welcome Professor Sam Thomas from California Lutheran University as our Lenten speaker.

In recent decades new theories have emerged regarding the formation of the biblical canon, the history of early Judaism and Christianity, and the varieties of religion in Mediterranean antiquity. Archeological discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi library have transformed the modern understanding of the ancient world.

Dr. Sam Thomas will provide a survey of these and other discoveries and speak about their impact on contemporary Judaism and Christianity.

Please join us for a very interesting series of lectures Wednesday evenings March 7, 14, 21, and 28.

Evening prayer begins at 6:30, followed by soup supper at 6:45, and with the lecture beginning at 7:30.

All are welcome!

Compline Service

Sunday, March 20, 7:30 p.m.

Presented by the Epiphany Schola

The service of Compline, which dates back to the first six hundred years of Christianity, consists of psalms, scripture, a hymn, a canticle, and prayers. Compline is offered when the work of the day is completed, and the quietness of evening settles over the hearts and minds of those who have come together in thankfulness for the blessings of the day that has passed and in anticipation of God’s gift of a new day.

Confirmation

Our faith and belonging as part of the Body of Christ is given to each of us in our baptism, which for many of us was at a very young age. Confirmation is the adult affirmation of our faith. We will begin preparing interested adults 16 years of age and older for the sacramental rite of Confirmation which will take place later in the spring. If you are interested in being confirmed, or if you have already been confirmed and are still interested in learning more, please come to an introductory meeting on Sunday, February 26, after the 10 a.m. service in the Founder’s room. If you are unable to make it to that meeting, please contact The Very Rev. Melissa McCarthy at mmccarthy@tcote.org for more information. All adults 16 years and older are welcome!

Interested in learning more about the diaconate?

It is an ordained order of ministry which focuses on serving others in need. In December, the Venerable Joanne Leslie, Archdeacon for the Diocese of Los Angeles, came to speak with us about the ministry of deacons and from her conversations with parishioners a small reading group has been formed.  If you are interested in learning more about diaconal ministry and joining this reading group, please email The Very Rev. Melissa McCarthy at mmccarthy@tcote.org and let her know of your interest. Our next meeting is this evening at 5:30 p.m.  All are welcome!
