Interested in learning more about the diaconate?

It is an ordained order of ministry which focuses on serving others in need. In December, the Venerable Joanne Leslie, Archdeacon for the Diocese of Los Angeles, came to speak with us about the ministry of deacons and from her conversations with parishioners a small reading group has been formed.  If you are interested in learning more about diaconal ministry and joining this reading group, please email the Very Rev. Melissa McCarthy at mmccarthy@tcote.org and let her know of your interest. All are welcome!  Our first meeting is this evening at 5:30 p.m.

Weekday Catechesis of the Good Shepherd!

Tuesdays at 3.30pm.

There is now a weekday session of CGS for Level II age children (7-9+) All those in Level II are welcome, as are those in the older Sunday school class who wish to be involved. We meet in Room 2 of Mitchel Hall. Contact Karen James for more information.

EYG (Epiphany Youth Group)

We meet in Bishop’s Hall from 9:00 a.m. – 9:45.  Our topic for discussion this morning is “Knowledge Puffs Up, But Love Builds Up.”  We will be talking about ego and consider how it “edges God out”.  Please come visit our 30-Hour Famine Table after service!

Outreach

We are scheduled to cater on Tuesday, February 14 for the Conejo Free Meals Program.  The numbers of clients usually increase as it gets cooler outside, so every donation will help.   As usual, please deliver food between 6:00 and 6:15 pm.  We will serve between 6:30 and 7:15 pm at our usual location in the main hall at Calvary Community Church.  If you can donate food or service, please contact me.  Thanks!  Contact Elizabeth Bryant 805.498.4499.

OWLs, will you be our valentine?

While there are many versions of the origins of Valentine’s Day, the tradition of card giving makes Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Let’s explore the history of these cards that celebrate love!

Valentine historian and collector, Jill Stoliker, plans to show examples of antique Valentines to clarify this fascinating historical timeline for our OWLs group on Thursday, February 9th at noon.

We will also enjoy a hot lunch which will most certainly be followed by a little chocolate.

The charge for lunch will be $10 per person and we ask you to RSVP to Dave Burrows in the church office by Monday, February 6.  So gather the special people in your life, and join us on the 9th.

EfM at Epiphany is Starting!

Education for Ministry is an Adult Theological Education program sponsored by the School of Theology at Sewanee focusing on the study of the Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, and Theology over four years (committed one year at a time). The goal of the program is to enable laity to gain a greater understanding of our faith by experiencing many of the same educational opportunities as our clergy experience in seminary. A new EfM group is forming at Epiphany and will meet on Monday evenings throughout the year. We are still able to accept a few more members before the program begins in February. If you are interested in learning more about EfM and the group that is forming, please contact either Melissa or Andy Tomat at atomat@roadrunner.com

Educate for Hope (Outreach and Children’s Ministry Fundraiser)

Last Sunday we started the fundraiser for Educate for Hope, to pay for a year’s tuition for a child at the Latin-Patriarch School in Palestine’s West Bank.  Due to the generosity of our Epiphany folks, the great news is we almost have enough to pay for two children to attend school!  Thank you to all who have contributed so far, it was wonderful to see the children paying a dollar or two from their allowance, along with adults who were able to write a check or put in cash! If you still wish to contribute it is not too late, you can still give. There will be a donations table out during coffee hour after both services on Sunday.
Checks should be made to The Church of the Epiphany and the memo line should read EDUCATE FOR HOPE. Thank you again

Today we start meeting in Bishop’s Hall from 9:00 a.m. – 9:45.  We are postponing our field trip to the Museum of Tolerance to later in the year.

GIVE THE GIFT OF LEARNING …ONE CHILD AT A TIME!
As part of our Outreach efforts for 2012 at Epiphany, we would like to be able to sponsor a child at the Latin Patriarch School in Palestine. The school is supported by St Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Zebabdeh and by Educate for Hope, through the Diocese of Los Angeles. The school teaches in English and Hebrew and the cost of one child’s education for a year is $700.  To start the process of raising the funds to sponsor a child, there will be a special collection today. Please consider making a contribution so that others can have the gift of education. Every donation, however small will make a difference.  Let us celebrate our community at Epiphany with a gift to our sisters and brothers in Christ. Come to the cake table in the Bishop’s hall to make your donation. Thank you

Outreach

Thank you to all of you who helped make December’s Conejo Free Meals Program a success. Due to the cold weather and the overnight program, we had a huge number of clients; due to the generosity of our parish, we were able to feed them all.  We are scheduled to cater again on Tuesday, January 10.  Please bring extra food if possible; even though the weather isn’t as cold, the overnight program has increased the numbers of clients. Again, if you have friends or neighbors who would like to join us in giving food or service, this would be a great month to introduce them to the program.  As usual, please deliver your food between 6:00 and 6:15 pm.  We will serve between 6:30 and 7:15 pm at our usual location in the main hall at Calvary Community Church.  If you can donate food or service, please contact me.  Thanks!  -Elizabeth evb@speakeasy.net  805.498.4499

MANNA: The C. V. Food Bank needs non-perishable super market items: food, toiletries, diapers, paper towels. Your generous support is always appreciated by MANNA’s recipients.  You can drop it by on Sundays or in the church office

OWLs (Older, Wiser laity)

Our next event is at noon on Thursday, January 12, 2012.  We will once again enjoy lunch and some social time together followed by a very special one-woman presentation by Martha Miller.

Martha will be performing her show entitled Anne Morrow Lindbergh: A Gentle Woman of Quiet Strength.  This presentation focuses on the wife of aviator Charles Lindbergh who balanced, with grace and sensitivity (and not without challenge), three worlds: home and family, aviation, and a gifted literary career. Listen to Anne’s story, through her own words. You will be fascinated, but even more: you will want to apply her wisdom to your own life.

Please feel free to invite friends or neighbors who might be interested in Martha’s presentation. Lunch will be catered (for $10 per person), so please call Dave Burrows in the church office to RSVP before Monday, January 9th.

Happy New Year, and we look forward to seeing you!
