Today we welcome guest preacher, Rev. Dr. Joanne Leslie.  On January 2011 she was appointed as the first female Archdeacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. Joanne’s diaconal ministry and her professional career have been in the field of public health. Joanne served as parish deacon at Holy Faith Church in Inglewood for several years and most recently at St. John’s Cathedral in downtown Los Angles. During this time, working with a consortium of urban churches, she helped to establish innovative nutrition and fitness programs to promote improved health for their congregations and surrounding communities. She is currently serving as chair of the board of the Jubilee Consortium. Joanne also has long standing links with UCLA, where she was an adjunct professor in the School of Public Health for 15 years. Prior to her ordination and to teaching at UCLA, she worked for many years on nutrition and health issues in francophone West Africa as a staff member or consultant for several development organizations including: the World Bank, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the International Center for Research on Women.
