EfM at Epiphany is Starting!

Education for Ministry is an Adult Theological Education program sponsored by the School of Theology at Sewanee focusing on the study of the Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, and Theology over four years (committed one year at a time). The goal of the program is to enable laity to gain a greater understanding of our faith by experiencing many of the same educational opportunities as our clergy experience in seminary. A new EfM group is forming at Epiphany and will meet on Monday evenings throughout the year. We are still able to accept a few more members before the program begins in February. If you are interested in learning more about EfM and the group that is forming, please contact either Melissa or Andy Tomat at atomat@roadrunner.com

Educate for Hope (Outreach and Children’s Ministry Fundraiser)

Last Sunday we started the fundraiser for Educate for Hope, to pay for a year’s tuition for a child at the Latin-Patriarch School in Palestine’s West Bank.  Due to the generosity of our Epiphany folks, the great news is we almost have enough to pay for two children to attend school!  Thank you to all who have contributed so far, it was wonderful to see the children paying a dollar or two from their allowance, along with adults who were able to write a check or put in cash! If you still wish to contribute it is not too late, you can still give. There will be a donations table out during coffee hour after both services on Sunday.

The school is supported by St Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Zebabdeh and by Educate for Hope, through the Diocese of Los Angeles. The school teaches in English and Hebrew and the cost of one child’s education for a year is $700.  To start the process of raising the funds to sponsor a child, there will be a special collection today. Please consider making a contribution so that others can have the gift of education. Every donation, however small will make a difference.  Let us celebrate our community at Epiphany with a gift to our sisters and brothers in Christ. Outreach

Thank you to all of you who helped make December’s Conejo Free Meals Program a success. Due to the cold weather and the overnight program, we had a huge number of clients; due to the generosity of our parish, we were able to feed them all.  We are scheduled to cater again on Tuesday, January 10.  Please bring extra food if possible; even though the weather isn’t as cold, the overnight program has increased the numbers of clients. Again, if you have friends or neighbors who would like to join us in giving food or service, this would be a great month to introduce them to the program.  As usual, please deliver your food between 6:00 and 6:15 pm.  We will serve between 6:30 and 7:15 pm at our usual location in the main hall at Calvary Community Church.  If you can donate food or service, please contact me.  Thanks!  -Elizabeth evb@speakeasy.net  805.498.4499

MANNA: The C. V. Food Bank needs non-perishable super market items: food, toiletries, diapers, paper towels. Your generous support is always appreciated by MANNA’s recipients.  You can drop it by on Sundays or in the church office

OWLs (Older, Wiser laity)

Our next event is at noon on Thursday, January 12, 2012.  We will once again enjoy lunch and some social time together followed by a very special one-woman presentation by Martha Miller.

Martha will be performing her show entitled Anne Morrow Lindbergh: A Gentle Woman of Quiet Strength.  This presentation focuses on the wife of aviator Charles Lindbergh who balanced, with grace and sensitivity (and not without challenge), three worlds: home and family, aviation, and a gifted literary career. Listen to Anne’s story, through her own words. You will be fascinated, but even more: you will want to apply her wisdom to your own life.

Please feel free to invite friends or neighbors who might be interested in Martha’s presentation. Lunch will be catered (for $10 per person), so please call Dave Burrows in the church office to RSVP before Monday, January 9th.

Happy New Year, and we look forward to seeing you!

Coming up in Advent

On Sunday, Dec. 11th, at 7 p.m., Christmas: In Prose and Poem returns to Epiphany.  If you’re interested in joining in this year’s program, tell Ken Johnson (or call him at 805-498-2591), who will fill you in on details.

As a participant in this 1+ hour program of selected readings on the Nativity of our Lord, you’ll read works old and new by the likes of St. Augustine, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, O. Henry, Emily Dickenson, Robert Graves, R.L. Stevenson, to name just a few.  It’s great fun, won’t demand much prep time, and should leave you with plenty of time to do that last-minute Christmas shopping to boot. So come – Join Us!

Advent Lessons and Carols
will be held on Sunday, December 4 at 5:00 p.m.
Presented by Parish, Choristers, Schola, High School, and Trainer choirs.
Festive reception follows.

One of the best-known Christmas services in the Western world is the festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.

This service celebrates the birth of Jesus by telling the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus in a series of short readings from the Bible. The readings are interspersed with carols, choral music and congregational singing of hymns.

Advent Lecture Series: Exploring the Psalms

Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.,

November 30, December 7 and 14.

Please join Dr. Brian Driscoll and the Very Rev. Melissa McCarthy the first three Wednesdays in Advent to explore why the Psalms are so special to us, why we sing them, and what they mean.  Wine and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

As part of our Outreach Program, we will remember the Veterans this November by offering poppies at both services on November 6th.  The poppies are lapel worn then for the week and especially on November 11th, Armistice Day, the day when WW1 officially ended, and on the following Sunday called “Remembrance Sunday.  Poppies became the symbol of this annual remembrance of those who died in foreign wars in honor of Canadian Captain John McCrae’s famous poem “In Flanders Fields.”
